Zhejiang University Summer English Camp - 2003

I had an idea this summer while teaching Summer Camp - let's make a movie!

My students agreed ... and it was a great experience.

Everything was planned and performed by the students ... and they did it all in English (which was the main point of the task).

We decided to redo the Hangzhou legend of Lady White Snake, but updated to 2003. The first link below is the movie we made. It's in Windows Media Format (word: it's a LARGE file which may take a while to download if you don't have a broadband/cable connection). The second link is some background on the original Lady White Snake Legend. Read it while you are downloading the movie. Enjoy!

Movie: Lady White Snake - 2003 (96 MB - 19'43")

Legend Background

P.S. I did the "post-production" editing and this was the first time I had tried this .... both using this format as a learning tool, as well as tinkering with DV (Digital Video) editing tools. Neophyte that I was, I mixed the final cut using Image Maker, ULead Video Studio 7, and Windows Movie Maker-trying to figure out which was the best to use. You can see the resulting hodge-podge in the movie. The audio is all messed up and, in parts runs 4 or 5 seconds behind the video. Since then, I have acquired  a copy of Adobe Premier 7.0 (software is very cheap in China, in case you haven't heard) and I swear by it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to go back and re-edit LWS-2003 properly. But as a first try, it isn't to bad. I have now incorporated "movie-making" into my classes. The students love it.
