Suzhou has many foreigners running around town. A few are teachers, some are tourists, many are joint-venture ex-pats. Here's a few familiar foreign faces:
Camille Matlack taught with my at Suzhou University in Spring of 1999. She then returned home to the mundane life of Atlanta, Georgia. But the Asian flu had bitten her and a mere 8 months later she returned to Suzhou University for another teaching stint. Here she dons the wedding garb for a traditional Chinese bride or concubine as penance for being a Braves fan
(see next Page).
Maria (L) and Rachel (R) say bye-bye to Ian Walters on the evening before he left to return to his home in Scotland after having survived a year in China. Ian is currently with Pfizer and living large in Scotland. I'll always treasure his last remark to me as he left:
"You know Chuck, for a Yank, you're not such a bad bloke after all."
Coming from a Scot, that's a high compliment.
