Chinese New Year
with Old Friends

A few days before Chinese New Year's, a group of my old adult students from Zhejiang University called and wanted to get together for dinner. I taught them in the autumn of 2001. They were all strangers to each other (and me) the first day of class, but we have stayed friends ever since. It was nice to see them again and a nice pre-Chinese New Year party.

Happy Holidays!

This year, 2006, marked the 5th year I have spent New Year's Day with Angela and Vivian.
I guess that makes it a tradition. We had lunch at Ling Long Town Restaurant on Nan Shan Lu.
Here's a new New Year's Day with Angela and Vivian page to memorialize our 5 years.

New Year's Day

It's the beginning of 2005, but it's "old student time".
Old students who still keep in touch through the years.

This has become a Hangzhou tradition
New Year's Day lunch with Angela and Vivian. (2005-01-01)
Angela and Vivian  were in my Adult Student class at Zhejiang University Fall, 2001.
It's the fourth straight New Year's Day that Angela, Vivian and I have spent together.
This year it was Dongbei food.
Last year (2004), it was Thai food at the Banana Leaf.
The year before (2003), we did Korean food. But I forgot to bring the camera.
In 2002, it was Chinese food at the Yellow Dragon Stadium.

Lansing (Z.J.U. Adult class 2002) (a.k.a. "Super Saleswoman" )
Lansing walked into my Adult Class in 2002 a half-hour late for the first class. I penalized her by making her introduce herself immediately. "My English name is Lansing, I sell Interior Decorations for a Finland company, and everyone calls me "Super-Saleswoman'!"
Late in 2004, she started a business of her own. Super-Saleswomen is now the owner the Bo Concept franchise in Hangzhou. Bo Concept is an upscale IKEA out of Denmark.

Random English
(@ an upscale shoe store at West Lake Mall)

NOTE:
Although most Chinese study English, they can't speak it well and don't notice it unless it is in their textbooks or on one of their innumerable tests. Outside the classroom, this shoe isn't even noticed. To most, it's just random letters.

HANGZHOU - JANUARY 12, 2003

Hail to the Chief

HANGZHOU WHITE HOUSE

Presidents Nixon, Ford and Bush (the elder) all visited Hangzhou on their trips to China.
But they didn't see this place.
Yes, a recently built amusement park near Hangzhou features a full-scale replica of the White House, the Washington Monument (complete with The Reflecting Pool), and
Mount Rushmore. All in one small area that is also used as a private school.
Oh, and the aforesaid White House includes the Oval Office and the Red Room.
Here's some pictures I took today on my trip to "America Land".
Only in China....

BASEBALL ... IN JANUARY ... IN CHINA
(2003-01)

On Saturday, January 4th, I and my senior students spent a chilly morning on the artificial turf of the new soccer field at Zhejiang University's new campus playing, of all things, baseball.
