New Stuff

News Stuff - The Best and Tritest

The Best

  • I have been offered the Foreign Expert position at Suzhou University (Su Da) and have decided to accept. So in late January I will be leaving Jinzhou to teach at one of the most prominent universities in China situated in the most beautiful city in China. Nevertheless, it was a tough decision to make because I have many good friends in Jinzhou and I enjoy teaching at Jinzhou Teachers' College.

  • Cuyahoga Community College - one of the colleges I've taught at has been named the third best community college in the entire U.S. of A. by Rolling Stone magazine. Congratulations, Ellen! (And I know I owe you a bunch of e-mail. Soon, soon!)

  • My sister Patti was just named national Vice-President of Human Resources for Rio Bravo Restaurants. So if you need a job, let me know and I'll send you her e-mail address.

The Tritest:

I have appeared on Jinzhou TV a few times in the past weeks:

  • First, I was at my friends restaurant for Old People's Day and there was a camera crew there. I also was quoted in the Jinzhou Evening Newspaper the next day. Read about it in The Cultural Evolution.

  • Then, I was conscripted to appear in a television commercial for the Italy Restaurant. In it I am sitting at a table with the owner's 4 year old son. I turn to the camera and say "I love the Italy Western Food Restaurant!" in Chinese. In the next scene, I say (in English this time), "The best things about China are the children and the food," as I pick up the kid and hand him some fruit.

  • Next up, TV-wise, will a commercial for another friend's restaurant, The Bear. He was a little upset when he heard I had been roped into doing a spot for the Italy, so I promised him I would do one for his restaurant. He also wants me to teach his chef how to cook a turkey. Turkey is non-existent in China but he claims he can get his hands on one. So 368 years after the Pilgrims hosted the first Thanksgiving dinner at Plymouth Rock, Jinzhou will witness it's first Thanksgiving dinner at the Bear Restaurant on Thursday, November 26, 1998. Drop in if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

  • The day after Thanksgiving, I head to Beijing for a few days to meet up with my cousin Barb and her friend. I hear they are bringing over some Christmas gifts from my family, so I'll get to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas all on the same weekend. Yea! I won't have to suffer through an interminable Christmas season. (Bah Humbug!)

  • Speaking of Christmas, the school gives the foreign teachers the day off. Not that there's anything special to do that day (although I hear there is a special mass at Jinzhou's only Catholic Church).
