An ancient Chinese proverb states:
"Shang you tian tang, xia you Su Hang".
("Su Hang" is "Suzhou and Hangzhou" in China.)
"In Heaven is Paradise; on Earth it's Suzhou and Hangzhou"
Marco Polo heard that proverb during his travels and wrote: "By the name of Singui [Suzhou] is to be understood 'the city of the earth', as by that of Kinsai [Hangzhou], 'the city of heaven".
In 1999, I was fortunate to have the chance to live and teach in the first-half of paradise - Suzhou.
Now, I am doubly fortunate to find myself living in the second-half of paradise - Hangzhou.
I'm close to Shanghai and only three hours from my old friends in Suzhou, so it doesn't get much better than this. Double paradise. In 1998 and again in 2000-2001, I lived and taught in
Jinzhou in Northeast China. If only my old friends from Jinzhou could be here
in Hangzhou with me, this place would, indeed, be Triple Paradise!.
I have been teaching in Hangzhou at Zhejiang University since July, 2001
(previously in the Foreign Language College, currently in the Continuing
Education Department). I also
now teach for the Zhejiang Education Institute teaching both students who will
become teachers in the future, as well as in-service training for Chinese
teachers. China's educational future in English teaching lies with her
Chinese-English teachers. It is in that role - teaching teachers - that I
think I can best serve English teaching in China.
In December, 2004, my paper on Chinese-English, titled
"Chinglish 2 English: Upgrade your Chinglish to English" was the feature article
in the Journal of the Chinese English Language Education Association (vol.27,
no.6, p. 3) - published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLRTP).
As an outline, it has been accepted for publication as a book by the Nankai
University Publishing House. Negotiations on that are ongoing.
