1999-2000

During the weeklong 1999 National Day Holiday, I returned to Jinzhou from Suzhou and hosted a dinner at
Lao Difang (The Olde Place) for all my old friends. We had some gorgeous company including (L to R) Neil's wife; Lynn, Vivian, and Theresa from the Jinzhou Power Plant (see Chuck in China 6);
Susan (who is now living in Canada) and
Cindy Zu (see Chuck in China 4).

Like last year, Mike and Anna helped me celebrate my birthday at the best restaurant in town. Later, at the Chinatown Bar, Anna
sang Happy Birthday to me. (Anna is an incredibly talented singer).
Behind her is another good friend, Peng Cheng. On the table lies the birthday cake Anna ordered.

A few weeks later, I reciprocated by throwing a birthday party for Anna. Her she places Queen Anna while King Mike attends her. Yes, I got her a cake, but no, I did not sing to her. I don't do Karaoke.

Upon my return to Jinzhou in January, 2000,
Cindy Zu (see Chuck in China 4) treated me to a
"homecoming" dinner at the "Earl Westerd Faad Redaurant" (sic). My old friend, Chen Ji is now the head chef there and although he can't spell very well, he's the best western food chef in all of Jinzhou. (Damned with faint praise!)

Teacher Donna was at Jinzhou Teachers' College during my first stint in 1998. She returned home to Canada but, as I hear from so many teachers, soon became bored and yearned to return to China. So she was back again for the Spring term 2000 at the newly re-named Jinzhou Normal University.

Lei Zi is a local Singer/Nightclub Owner/Model. In March, I was invited to work with her to make a TV commercial for a local Wedding Photography Studio. This is a picture from the shoot. Lei Zi is wearing traditional Chinese marriage Qi Pao.

In another picture from the shoot, Lei Zi and I pose as husband and wife in traditional Chinese wedding attire. When I sent this picture to my friends and family in America and showed it to my students in Jinzhou, it caused quite a stir. Until they realized it was April 1.
