chapter fourteen @ 2004 January

new west lake - south line

The first phase of the re-design of the West Lake area was the southern side of the lake. A beautiful area with a tree-lined street (Nan Shan Lu-South Mountain Rd.), I was dubious of the plan when they shut down the whole area, erected tall, blue corrugated fencing to shield the public from viewing the work. I wasn't sure how they could make the area any more beautiful. But they succeeded. When the "New South Line" opened in October, 2002, it was a smashing success. They even uncovered some of the beautiful, but previously hidden Shanghai-style, turn-of-the century homes, now reconverted into coffee houses, boutiques and art galleries.

Later, in May of 2003, a new area along the southern shore - Xin Xihu Tiandi (New Westlake Paradise on Earth) opened. Built and managed by the same group that oversees Shanghai's famous Tiandi, the area is a peaceful, relaxing way to kill an afternoon. It has a few upscale places including Va Bene (an Italian restaurant out of Hong Kong), Pao (a Japanese bakery which makes the best bread in Hangzhou), and even a Starbucks and Haägen Dazs. (In China, Starbucks and Haägen Dazs qualify as upscale.)

Here are some scenes from the new South Line of West Lake:

The Emporer's Dock

"It is said" that when the emporers would come to Hangzhou, this is where they docked their boats. (HA!)

Dykes Allowed

West Lake has causeways, but no dikes.

Hangzhou Sidewalk Map

There's a large bas-relief map of old Hangzhou cemented in the pavement in the new Nan Shan park. Here, many Chinese try to get their bearings straight.

A South Line Coffee House

Laowai!

A typical Hangzhou tourist taking pictures of the foreigners (Laowai) spotted in the provincial capital of Zhejiang.

The Golden Lady

This statue was the centerpiece of the intersection of Nan Shan Lu and Hubin Lu at the opening of the South Line. Then Phase 2 of the New West Lake re-design happened and the statue disappeared...maybe because she once stood at the confluence of the two southern mouths of the new Hubin Tunnel.

Yue Fei adjusts his pants...er...sword

Yue Fei is one of China's most famous heroes. His tomb is on the north side of the lake. But they erected a statue of him on the south side of the lake.

And here are some scenes from Xin Tiandi:

A Water Fountain!

A Water Fountain !!

A Water Fountain!!!

Public water fountains don't exist in China. Until now. Here, the hoi polloi finally realize ... free water!!!! So they rush to fill their water bottles. For free. "Free" is a rare thing in China.

Feng Shui Bridge

Jin Yong + Bridge + China's Neptune

Neptune (China-style)

Sorry, I forgot his Chinese name.

Chiang Kai Shek and Soong Mei Ling's Villa

Chiang Kai Shek and Soong Mei Ling (Jiang Jia Shi and Sun Mei Ling) kept a lakeside villa in Hangzhou on Nan Shan Lu. Since the renovation of the South Line, the villa is now an upscale restaurant featuring Shark's Fin dishes. Name of the joint? 1917. Soong Mei Ling died a couple of months before I took these pictures. But you can see her spirit wafting through the trees if you click and look closely, can't you?
