Suzhou has been known as a canal city.
In past times, it was known as the Venice of the East.
As it has developed in recent years, quite a few were lost to "progress".
Still, many canals remain and they make for lovely photos
(even if they stink from the shit that floats in them).
Hopefully, the next step in the Suzhou City development plan will be: Keep the remaining canals AND clean them up so that once again, like hundreds of years ago, people will once again want to rent boats and glide up and down and around what's left of the city canal system.
